Simple Cooking Precepts for a Little House by Jessie Conrad, with a preface by Joseph Conrad. This is the rare privately printed pamphlet edition of Joseph Conrad's preface, printed in 1921 in an edition of only 100 copies, each signed by Joseph Conrad; this is copy number 38, signed by him on the title page. The pamphlet contains the preface alone and was printed before the cookbook itself appeared in volume form. Joseph Conrad's preface is a small classic in its own right — "the purpose of a cookery book is one and unmistakeable. Its object can conceivably be no other than to increase the happiness of mankind."
The pamphlet is bound in blue half leather with blue cloth boards and is housed in a plain blue cloth folding case. The binding is in Good condition: the leather is rubbed, with losses at the head and foot of the spine and along the spine strip, and the cloth boards are lightly rubbed. The pamphlet's original staples remain visible in the gutter. The text is clean and bright with mild age toning and a few soft corner creases. The folding case is sound with light wear.
