A complete course in traditional English smocking. After an introduction and a chapter on the early history of English smocking, the book covers preparation of materials (gathering using dots, gathering using a pleater, and thread preparation), then works through the basic smocking stitches and combinations — outline, stem, rope, cable, double cable, baby wave, baby diamond, quarter wave, quarter diamond, simple wave, large wave, small link, link, cable diamond, and wave combinations — followed by advanced and fill-in stitches (herringbone, turret, spools and bars, dot, wheat, weaving/stacking, flowerette, simple rosebud, bullion rose, and lazy daisy) and special smocking stitches (honeycomb, Van Dyke, chain, and feather). The back cover shows the "Devon" design worked in 22 numbered rows.
The book is in very good condition. The front cover is bright and clean, the back cover is clean with one small crease at the top corner, and the photographed title, contents, and copyright pages are clean, flat, and unmarked.
Great find at a great price! Please note the S&H charges, which include USPS postage, materials, and handling. Pictured bookends are not included in the sale.
